Frequently Asked Questions

What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled microchannels in the skin. This process supports the skin’s natural healing response and helps stimulate collagen and elastin, which can improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture and dull skin.
To prepare for your microneedling and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, avoid shaving the treatment area within 24 hours of your appointment. Be sure to stay hydrated and eat a meal beforehand. Discontinue the use of active ingredients such as glycolic, salicylic, or lactic acids, retinol, exfoliants, and treatments like waxing, plucking, threading, or dermaplaning at least five days prior. If you’ve recently had filler or toxin treatments, wait at least two weeks before undergoing microneedling or chemical peels. Additionally, refrain from any ablative laser treatments or electrolysis 21 days before your session. Ensure there are no active infections, wounds, or herpes simplex outbreaks in the treatment area, and notify your provider of any medical conditions, medications, or recent Accutane use that could affect healing or cause photosensitivity
Microneedling is a procedure that creates controlled microchannels to stimulate collagen production. It’s suitable for acne scars, large pores, fine lines, and rough texture. At HealthOne Skin Clinic, we use a hyaluronic acid serum for regular microneedling sessions. On the other hand, platelet-rich-plasma (PRP), known as “liquid gold”, is derived from your own blood. It can also be used alongside microneedling to support skin rejuvenation. This option is best for dull skin, acne scars, texture, glowing skin, and more advanced rejuvenation.
We use the latest Dermapen4 (Dp4), an FDA and Health Canada-approved device that penetrates up to three millimeters.
Microneedling treats dull skin, uneven tone, texture, acne scars, pigmentation, sun damage, stretch marks, and large pores.
We recommend starting with three sessions for optimal results.
Most patients tolerate microneedling well. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to help ensure comfort during the treatment.
You may feel mild prickling. Skin may appear red, like a sunburn, for a few hours to a few days. Minor bleeding, warmth, tightness, or itchiness can occur but usually subsides within 12-48 hours.
Side effects are minimal and may include dryness, flaking, or minor scabbing. Rarely, there’s a risk of hyperpigmentation, crusting, swelling, or infection. Permanent scarring is extremely rare.
It’s not suitable for those with active infections, rashes, warts, skin cancer, active acne, autoimmune disorders, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
The cost of microneedling in Toronto varies based on the treatment area, whether PRP is used, the number of sessions, and your desired skin outcomes. At HealthOne Skin Clinic, a single session starts at $400. We offer packages and financing options if you get a series of treatments.
You may be a good candidate for microneedling if you wish to improve any of the following: Acne scars, enlarged pores, textured skin, fine lines and early wrinkles, light pigmentation, or dull skin. It’s important to have a complimentary microneedling consultation with a medical aesthetician to ensure you’re a good candidate.
Microneedling is not suitable if you have active acne or infections, are taking antibiotics, pregnant or breastfeeding, or have recently tanned or sunburned. This is why a consultation is required prior to treatment.
Yes, microneedling is an effective treatment for depressed acne scars. It stimulates the production of collagen which can help reduce their appearance. If you have raised/keloid scars, microneedling may not be a suitable treatment – please consult with our medical aesthetician for personalized insights. Microneedling is commonly used to improve the appearance of depressed acne scars by supporting collagen production and skin remodeling. It is not usually the best option for active acne or raised/keloid scars, so a consultation is important before treatment.
Some patients notice a fresher glow within days, especially if they got microneedling with PRP. However, the creation of new collagen happens gradually over the course of the next few months following treatment – meaning your results will build slowly over time. For concerns like acne scars, deep texture, and enlarged pores, a series of multiple treatments will yield the best results.
Downtime is usually minimal. It’s normal to experience redness, tightness, dryness, flaking, or mild flaking within the first few days after treatment. Many people compare the feeling to a mild sunburn. Your provider will give you aftercare instructions to ensure you heal properly.
Yes. Because microneedling does not rely on heat the way some laser treatments do, it’s safe for darker skin tones. However, the settings used, aftercare, and skin history matter, especially for pigmentation-prone skin. It’s important to visit a medical aesthetician who completes a thorough medical assessment prior to treatment.
The more microneedling treatments you get, the better your results will be. Many patients begin with three treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Depending on your unique skin, medical history, and aesthetic goals, your medical aesthetician will recommend a personalized treatment plan which may include maintenance treatments to support long-term collagen production.
Microneedling is a safe and minimally invasive procedure when performed by a professional with appropriate equipment, sterile techniques, and proper aftercare. Improper or at-home use can increase risks sush as infection or unwanted skin changes. This is why you should always visit a professional, such as a medical aesthetician at HealthOne Skin Clinic.
